Morality in America
When studying the founding of the United States, you can’t help but encounter the faith of the nation’s forefathers. Time and again they recognized God’s hand in the shaping of America. You will find Him repeatedly mentioned in their words and documents. And you will find Him having an active, vibrant role in the country’s early history.
Today, God continues His work in America – but it’s in a nation that has clearly lost its moral compass. Every week, “Morality in America” will address the myriad of moral concerns facing the United States and undermining its Godly heritage. After you read, remember to intercede in prayer for America – that this nation will return to the Christian standards that once defined it.
President Trump Keeps Pro-Life Promises
U.S. continues to defund abortion
By Holly L. Meade
Abortions. There have been over 1.4 billion performed in the world since 1980. So far in 2017, there have been 11.7 million worldwide. In the United States since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, more than 59 million babies have perished at the hand of abortionists. These numbers are tragic. Yet, thankfully, America’s president is actively taking steps to do something about these extreme numbers of innocent lives lost.
Prior to last year’s presidential campaign, Donald Trump publicly stated he was a supporter of abortion rights. Though it is unusual for a Republican presidential nominee to become more conservative about abortion during an election cycle, Trump’s stance on this subject began to change during the campaign. He recruited the influential pro-life leader, Marjorie Dannenfelser, to lead his campaign’s national "Pro-Life Coalition."
In a letter to pro-life leaders inviting them to join his coalition, Trump also promised to make the Hyde Amendment, which bans the use of federal funds to pay for abortions for Medicaid recipients, a permanent law. He also committed to defunding Planned Parenthood and passing a national ban on abortions after 20 weeks. Then Trump selected Mike Pence, a staunch abortion foe, as his running mate.
Since the election, President Trump has fulfilled his campaign promise of "a pro-life justice in the mold of Justice Scalia" by nominating Judge Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court. The Senate-confirm Gorsuch took his seat on the high court’s bench in mid-April. Then the president signed an executive order barring federal funds from organizations that promote abortion around the world, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
Recently, the Trump Administration announced that United States foreign assistance dollars will no longer be provided to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) based on its promotion and support of forced abortions and involuntary sterilizations in China. Currently, the U.S. provides about $32.5 million a year to UNFPA.
The State Department determined that the UNFPA was in violation of the Kemp-Kasten Amendment, which was originally signed into law in 1985 by the Reagan Administration. The amendment prohibits giving U.S. "population assistance" funds to "any organization or program which, as determined by the President of the United States, supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization."
Even though Congress has renewed the Kemp-Kasten Amendment each year, the anti-coercion law was not enforced under the Clinton and Obama administrations. During fiscal year 2016, the Obama Administration gave $67.88 million to UNFPA. For 2017, those funds will be redirected to the Global Health Programs account, which will be accessed by the U.S. Agency for International Development to support family planning, maternal and reproductive health activities—without committing abortion—in developing countries.
God’s Word is very clear about the value of every human life: "Children are a heritage from the Lord" (Psalm 127:3), "Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them (Psalm 173:16), and "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you" (Jeremiah 1:5).
The president’s recent actions are very encouraging in the fight to end abortion. However, Americans must take their position in this battle and that is, first and foremost, through prayer. It is a biblical command that you pray for your president and those in authority. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 says, "First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way."
When scripture says that the "king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will" (Proverbs 21:1), it means that God can turn the heart of a king, a president, or anyone in authority at any time and in any way. If there are policies and platforms that don’t conform to biblical ethics, the intercession of Christians can be used in a powerful, transforming way. That means that you should be praying continuously for God’s will to be done through President Trump regarding the sanctity of human life. You should pray that he will be surrounded by godly counsel and, most important, that all America’s leaders would personally know God and the salvation found through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Pray that President Trump:
- Will seek God continually for wisdom and knowledge.
- Will uphold a strong standard of righteousness in America.
- Will strive to completely defund Planned Parenthood’s abortion activities and end abortion in the U.S. and worldwide.
